The Last lecture

Found this post as draft months/weeks  ago lol.

When I first heard about the book The Last Lecture, I actually thought it was a fiction book. Once I found out that it was a true story based on this guy’s ‘final’ lecture, it didn’t surprise me that this book became a best-seller book. In short, Randy Pausch were invited to an event where the theme involves the speakers to give lectures as though it was gonna be their last. Randy accepted that offer. Not long before the event, the doctor said his cancer had made a ‘comeback’ and told him that he only have few months more to live. The ‘last lecture’ now really is gonna be his last lecture.

What would you do if you were Randy? Haha for me, I would have travelled around the world!! Well, he decided to spend time preparing his lectures instead of investing all of his last days with his family. The reason? He believes his last lecture is gonna be much more meaningful and inspiring for his sons. His lecture is going to stay on and he believes when his sons grow up, his lecture will be able to benefit them. Randy’s final lecture was titled ‘ Achieving Your Childhood Dreams’.

The event draws plenty of attention and buzz with Randy’s condition and following on the book became even more famous and soon the video recording of the lecture appeared all over the internet. If you’re interested, search for it at Youtube. Randy passed away several months ago and his sons are very young at the moment. Most likely, his sons wouldn’t feel much of the loss of their father but when they grow up and read the book or watch back that video, they will get to know their father through that and be able to receive what Randy has poured out for them.

I would like to describe Randy Pausch in one sentence, he knew how he wants to die hence he know how he’s gonna live his last days. We need to decide how are we gonna be remembered and what kind of legacy we planned to live behind, that way only we will know how are we gonna live our life right now to achieve that final goal of our lives. In the movie The Last Samurai (let me clarify, I;m not a fan of Tom Cruise but i like Ken Watanabe though hehehe), one of the last scene where after the samurai leader played by Watanabe commit harakiri (suicide) the emperor who himself is an ex student of the samurai asked Tom Cruise “ Tell me how he die…”. Tom Cruise replied “ I will tell you how he lived”. It is how we live that will bring impact to other people, not how we die. It is not what we have when we die that will be remembered but it is what we do throughout our lives. A few good movie to watch that deal with life and death are Tuesdays with Morrie and The Bucket List. Checkout my blogger friends review on those movies.
